A Warning to Governor Yusuf: Respect the Rights of Students and Citizens

We urge you to reconsider your recent ban on demonstrations and the order to arrest student protesters. As a public servant, it is crucial to remember that your authority is subject to the Nigerian Constitution, which supersedes any state or local laws.


The Nigerian Constitution states:


- Section 1(1): "The Constitution is Supreme and its provisions shall have a binding force on all authorities and persons throughout the Federal Republic of Nigeria."

- Section 1(3): "If any other law is inconsistent with the provisions of this Constitution, this Constitution shall prevail, and the other law shall, to the extent of the inconsistency, be void."

- Section 39(1): "Every person shall be entitled to freedom of expression, including freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart ideas and information without interference."

- Section 40: "Every person shall be entitled to assemble freely and associate with other persons, and in particular, he may form or belong to any political party, trade union, or any other association for the protection of his interests."

We see no justification for banning protests, which you yourself have utilized in the past. Furthermore, arresting students in Kano would be a grave mistake, potentially leading to severe political repercussions in 2027. The youth, who make up 80% of the student population, played a significant role in your election as Governor. We advise you to tread carefully in your dealings with them.

While we encourage peaceful protests, we also urge students to refrain from violence and manipulation by unpatriotic politicians. We will not condone any unethical or immoral behavior. We believe in the democratic rights of citizens and expect your administration to respect and uphold these fundamental freedoms.

Reconsider your stance and engage in constructive dialogue with the students and protesters. Let us work together to build a more inclusive and democratic society.

    I just don't know why this kano is having some lacuna in their exercise of leadership don't know if the people who are called the elder statemen are just exerting poor leadership and the advisers to this govt is a failed one....I don't know if you are getting me Sani Sule Sule SULASH (SOKOTO).
