A Misguided Priority: The New National Anthem Bill is an Insult to Nigerians

By Sule Sani Sule

The recent passage of the New National Anthem bill by the National Assembly is a glaring insult to Nigeria and its citizens. At a time when our nation is grappling with unprecedented socio-economic crises, our lawmakers have chosen to prioritize a symbolic gesture over substantive solutions.

Nigeria is a state where:

- Innocent lives are lost daily to violence and terrorism

- Kidnappings and banditry are rampant

- Education is in shambles

- Healthcare services are inadequate

- Corruption has reached an all-time high

- Inflation is crippling

- The Naira is depreciating

And yet, our National Assembly deems it fitting to focus on a new national anthem. This is a cruel distraction from the pressing issues that demand their attention.

Furthermore, the very structure of our legislature is flawed. A bi-cameral system with 469 members, earning exorbitant salaries and allowances, while the masses struggle to make ends meet, is a travesty. Our representatives have forgotten their duty to serve the people, instead, they dictate to their subjects, ignoring the public hearing processes and perpetuating an oligarchy.

We demand a more responsible and responsive government, one that prioritizes the welfare of its citizens over symbolic gestures.
