The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has officially received a petition from the Northern Youth Merger Group APC, urging an investigation into the alleged mismanagement and diversion of palliative food items in Kano State.
The petition, signed by the group's National Coordinator, Hon. Musa Mujahid Zaitawa, was acknowledged by the ICPC on the 16th of August, 2024.
The document details alarming incidents of corruption involving high-ranking officials in the Kano State Government, including Dr. Abdullahi Baffa Bichi, Secretary to the State Government, and Mr. Shehu Wada Sagagi, Chief of Staff to the Governor.
According to the petition, on December 3, 2023, Governor Yusuf of Kano State uncovered a warehouse in the Sharada Industrial Estate where food items meant for palliatives—specifically maize and rice—were being illegally diverted.
The items, intended for vulnerable groups, including persons with physical challenges and widows of armed forces personnel, were allegedly rebagged and resold in the market instead of being distributed to the beneficiaries.
Despite the Governor's immediate directive for an investigation by the Commissioner of Police, the petitioners allege that there has been no significant progress in holding those responsible accountable.
The Northern Youth Merger Group APC expressed deep concerns over the integrity and effectiveness of the Palliative Distribution Compliance Committee, which is chaired by Dr. Bichi and Mr. Sagagi. The group emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to ensure justice and transparency in the distribution of palliative resources meant to alleviate the suffering of vulnerable populations in the state.
The ICPC's acknowledgment of the petition marks the first step in what could be a significant probe into the alleged misconduct. The public now awaits the Commission's next move in addressing these serious allegations.
