Rimin Zakara Residents Accuses ministry of land of Illegal Demolition

Residents of Rimin Zakara in Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State have accused the Commissioner for Land, Abduljabbar Umar, of illegally demolishing their buildings, an action that has led to protests in the community.

The residents staged a demonstration following the demolition, which took place on Sunday night. They also accused security agencies, Bayero University Kano (BUK), and the Kano State Government of being involved in the destruction of their properties.

The incident reportedly resulted in the deaths of four people, while many others sustained injuries.

A resident, Kabiru Sadi Salisu, alleged that the Kano State Government was fully behind the demolition.

However, a reliable source within the Ministry of Land revealed that the matter is currently on the governor’s table and that he will make the final decision.

It was gathered that there has been a long-standing dispute between the residents of Rimin Zakara and Bayero University Kano over the ownership of land in the area.

Recently, Commissioner Abduljabbar Umar officially handed over documents of the disputed land to the university.

On January 27, the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, led a delegation to the commissioner’s office to express gratitude for the allocation of the land.

A source familiar with the issue disclosed that the Ministry of Land had taken over the responsibilities of the Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA), the agency legally mandated to handle demolitions.

The source further alleged that the demolitions carried out by the ministry were unlawful and were causing unrest in the state.

The affected residents are calling on the Kano State Government to intervene and provide justice.

Meanwhile, all eyes remain on Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who is expected to make a decisive ruling on the crisis.
