Maliya: Senator Barau Jibril's Quest for Kano Governorship

By Sule Sani Sule

Senator Barau I Jibril, popularly known as Maliya, is a distinguished gentleman with philanthropic attributes. He's a kingmaker in the National Assembly and a prominent Northern politician with sound track records.

Mr. Barau boasts exceptional leadership skills and humanitarian activities. Notably, he's the only individual to have served as a Member of the House of Representatives and Senator representing different Local Governments.

His survival in the last general election was a testament to his capacity and political expertise, despite the challenges posed by then-governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and the opposition NNPP.

As a pillar of the APC G7 movement, Barau's strength sustained the movement, giving the governor a tough time.

Now, Senator Barau is strategizing a move to the Kano State Governorship seat. However, his early declaration may be a miscalculation, making him a target. A silent, underground approach may be more effective.

To succeed, Senator Barau needs a political think tank with expertise and strategies. Financial support may not guarantee loyalty, as seen in the "operation tsamar nama" case of the 2023 APC candidate. Building sustainable solutions for remote communities and empowering the masses will yield better results.

The chaos in the NNPP and the perceived crisis between the Governor and his Godfather could be advantageous if played strategically. Securing the ticket won't be easy, with internal threats from Tinubu's loyalists and Ganduje's potential candidates. Senator Barau must tread carefully and change his steps.

Kwankwasiyya Rubble-Rousing Short-Wave Politics

By Aliyu Dalhatu Adamu Department of Sociology, Federal University of Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State. The construction of 85km rural roads was flagged-off by the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Monday 17th June 2024 at Madobi Local Government. The occasion afforded Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 elections, an opportunity to ventilate his feelings on the forces in political contest in Kano State.  Many people believe that Kano is suffering great abuse in the tight grief of Kwankwaso as an alternate, if not the real, governor in his illegal Third Term. In his emotional outburst, the former Presidential candidate alluded to a number of issues, which many see as pointers to the inner workings of his mind, suggesting his political fortunes in the State are nose-diving or in the least taking a big hit. For instance, from the vituperations of Kwankwaso, one can easily understand that, the NNPP, as...
